How the three route types differ

Route names describe how data travels from the local entry point to the international exit. IEPL, relay and direct routes are not simply a ranking from best to worst; the right path depends on the entry network, target region, time of day and application.

CU-IEPL IEPL

A controlled link between entry and exit

IEPL focuses on placing the cross-border segment on a more controlled transmission path. Your device first connects to a local entry point, then data travels along the controlled link to an international exit, reducing the number of unpredictable sections on the public network. This arrangement is well suited to sustained video meetings, extended remote desktop sessions, repository synchronization and large file transfers where session continuity matters.

Dedicated-route resources generally cost more to build and maintain than ordinary paths, making them a better fit when stability is the priority. They do not mean “always faster in every environment”: local access quality, wireless interference and the target service can still affect performance. Choose the exit region first, then compare IEPL and relay routes within that region.

Reach a suitable entry point first, then choose an international exit

Relay routes add a managed hop between the local connection and the final exit. The purpose is not to add steps, but to avoid an unsuitable default route: when an operator’s direct path to a target region is indirect, congested or unstable, a relay can send the request to a more suitable aggregation point before it enters the international link. Common destinations in Asia-Pacific, North America and Europe are usually good candidates for keeping a relay as an alternative path.

Relay resources and routing complexity generally fall between dedicated and direct routes. Relay performance is sensitive to the entry point, and different relay entries in the same city may follow different network directions. In everyday use, focus less on route names and more on page response, video buffering, download continuity and application login stability. If one entry performs poorly, switching to another relay in the same region is often more sensible than changing regions.

Direct from the local network to the exit

Direct routes use no additional relay; your device connects to the international server through its current network. Their simple path suits environments where the local operator has a smooth route to the target region. They are also useful for checking regional content, reaching less common locations and making a temporary exit change. Services with broad coverage often use direct routes to extend the available choice of countries and cities beyond major hubs.

Direct routes are more sensitive to changes in public-network routing, so results can vary by region, operator and time of day. They are relatively economical and useful for broad coverage, but the word “direct” alone does not indicate quality. For sustained work or long viewing sessions, keep a relay or IEPL route in the same region as a fallback. For brief browsing or a quick regional check, direct routes are often the fastest way to establish a path.

ROUTE SELECTION

Set a route selection order by use case

Choose the region first, then the route type, and finally validate it with a real task. A successful connection alone does not show whether a route is suitable: websites, video, AI sessions, games and workplace software place different demands on the path.

BROWSE

Everyday browsing

When browsing international websites, start with an exit that is geographically close and offers broad content access. If your frequently used sites are spread across regions, begin with an Asia-Pacific entry rather than choosing a distant exit immediately. If pages open normally but images or attachments load inconsistently, the current path may not work well with some resource domains; switch to another relay or direct route in the same region.

Everyday browsing depends more on consistent response than on eliminating one brief delay. Keeping one primary entry and one backup entry in the same region can reduce the chance of site security checks being triggered by repeated location changes.

STREAM

Video and Streaming

Choose the target region based on the content library, then start with an exit marked “Supported” in the table. After connecting, reopen the app or browser page so the platform can reassess content for the new exit region. Seeing the target library is only the first step; also check continuous playback, seeking and switching between titles.

If the library region is correct but playback buffers frequently, try another city or route type within the same country. Do not change countries first: a regional change also alters the library and account-risk signals, making the issue harder to isolate. If the browser still retains the previous region, clear the relevant site data and check again.

AI ACCESS

AI Tools

AI tools often check the exit region, address reputation and session continuity together. Choose a region where the service is clearly available, and keep registration, login and subsequent long conversations in the same region whenever possible. Frequent switches between distant exits may trigger another login check or interrupt long content generation.

If the page opens but a prompt cannot be submitted, first switch routes within the same region instead of repeatedly refreshing or changing accounts. Relay and IEPL routes are better suited to workflows that require longer sessions; direct routes can help check other available regions, but actual tool responses should determine the choice.

GAME

Gaming connections

Choose an exit based on the game server region first; the region matters more than the route name. If the target server is in Japan, compare different entries in Japan first; for North American servers, compare exits within North America. Login, matchmaking and gameplay may use different connections, so reaching the launcher does not prove that the entire path is suitable.

During testing, pause large background synchronizations so local network competition does not distort the result. If the connection drops, switch route types within the same region first. Change countries only when the game permits cross-region play and the target server genuinely changes. Results are also affected by the game server, home network and wireless conditions.

WORK

Work and collaboration

Work tasks often include code hosting, cloud documents, video meetings, remote desktops and file synchronization, so a single page-load speed test cannot represent overall quality. Where possible, keep company resources, collaboration platforms and cloud services on an exit in the same region to avoid frequent location changes during one work session. For persistent connections, compare IEPL and relay routes first.

Before an important meeting or remote session, connect and complete the application login in advance so you do not change exits mid-task. Start route troubleshooting with the local entry

Cross-border access passes through your device, home or office network, local operator, entry point, relay and international exit. A change at any stage may appear as slow page loads, video buffering or interrupted sessions. Keep variables to a minimum while troubleshooting: verify the local network first, then the region, and finally compare route types.

If performance is poor on Wi-Fi, first try a more stable local connection. If only one target service is affected, keep the current region and switch to another route there. If multiple international websites fail, re-import the subscription or check the client connection status. Following this order helps distinguish local issues from exit-route issues.
